Businesses are sleepwalking into a digital future but it’s not too late

    • Most of us are guilty of putting off what can be done tomorrow, especially if there are more pressing things commanding our attention. Whether it’s repointing the house, clearing out the gutters or fixing a broken tile on the roof – we promise we’ll look at it ‘tomorrow.’

      Sometimes, the strategy pays off and sometimes, we do get round to it. But all too often, the problem mounts up and eventually, you’re forced to deal with the issue when it becomes urgent – like when the roof starts leaking.

      Millions of UK businesses are risking just this by putting off digitisation projects. In a Censuswide survey, commissioned by Procensol, we asked 258 managers in manufacturing, finance and professional services about their experience of digital transformation.

      That could have been anything from overhauling legacy systems, to moving to the cloud to automation.

      Asked about their readiness for technology upgrades, six out of every ten respondents (59%) agreed that “digital transformation is important for our business, but we are not well-equipped or prepared”.

      And, as a result, one in 10 planned projects was shelved. When asked why projects hadn’t gone ahead, business leaders talked about “Brexit”, “overly complicated processes” and “concerns about other priorities.” 

      While it’s great that businesses feel that digital transformation is important, it is worrying that they are putting off essential upgrades that undoubtedly could future-proof their organisations.

      And projects needn’t be the resource-heavy, time-intensive black holes they used to be. With the arrival of low code, repeatable processes across multiple, siloed departments can be managed – with ease – by platforms that can be set up and mobilised in weeks. Once implemented, systems will make sense of fractured data landscapes, creating clear and consolidated views of an entire business’s practices that can be acted upon.

      Rather than over-complicate processes, careful implementation of low code tools will simplify them.

      Sadly, for the want of a little more education about technology – businesses are sleepwalking into a digital future that will leave them behind, because they’re still relying on sharing information with print outs.

      The potential use cases are many, the opportunities overwhelming – but businesses need to act now.
