Earlier this week, we hosted ‘The Rise of the Bots: An Introduction to Intelligent Automation for Businesses’, a free breakfast event held at The Cube in central Birmingham, for organisational leaders wanting to learn more about the potential of robotic process automation.
Aaron Marshall, Head of Automation Practice, kicked off the event, explaining to attendees – who were from a range of industries, including finance, manufacturing, marketing and professional services – what automation actually is: a digital worker performing a series of tasks (bots) that can be configured to complete a repetitive task at scale, working alongside humans and freeing them up to work on more creative and valuable problems.
A demonstration was then shown of a human worker completing a traditional business process, in this case the logging of invoices. An automation toolset, Aaron explained, could ‘watch’ this work and then expand this to a series of instructions. This would allow a bot to be created that would have the ability to complete the process itself, looping through data, such as a spreadsheet. A bot was then shown completing the exact same process.
Following this demonstration there was a round of questions and answers, where attendees could ask the experts what they needed to know about RPA. Here are the three key insights for SMEs considering the merits of a digital workforce.
Who manages the digital worker?
The digital worker only uses the data it has been configured to use, so mistakes are not possible. Nevertheless, checks and balances can be built into any process, at any stage, allowing you to add rules and flag up exceptions, which can then be passed onto a human for closer inspection.
How can you change a process once it is in place?
This is the beauty of low code integrations. There is no need to hire in-house staff who are technical experts. There is little to no code editing required when using an RPA platform such as Automation Anywhere.
